All about us

STEPS is a Guernsey-based charity (Association of Guernsey Charities No. 259), affiliated to the Pedestrians Association (now "Living Streets") - a national body representing the interests of all people who value life in their local streets and want motorised transport to be their servant - not their master.

STEPS was set up in May 2002 by a group of islanders who felt that pedestrians were being forced off the roads by the increasing volume of traffic in the island. It was no longer safe for children to walk or cycle to school, for mothers to walk to their corner shop or health centre or for the elderly to meet and talk with their neighbours. We were concerned for the future of our children: how will they develop adult coping skills when their view of the world is restricted to seeing it mainly through the windows of their parents' cars on the way between two points?

Making our surroundings more liveable, equitable and attractive with less pollution, congestion and crime is one of the greatest challenges facing developed countries. There isn't a single solution but it is important to recognise that areas that encourage walking will create the right environment for a healthier, wealthier, safer, cleaner and more sociable place. Vibrant streets help to revitalise neighbourhoods and reconnect people.

We believe that Guernsey's population has relinquished ownership of its roads and lanes to the motor car. Few would argue that most of our streets are either pleasant or safe places to be - for pedestrians, cyclists, or even for car drivers.
